Unlike some programs, STS puts a heavy emphasis
on academics and academic involvement. Therefore, we’ve structured
our program around these very basic, very necessary learning blocks.
Language Focus:
Students are separated into groups for reading, spelling,
grammar, writing and comprehension. Tutors facilitate reading and writing
circles whereby children can support one another in these areas. We’ve
also invested in language-based games and activities that correlate
with standardized testing and that reinforce the fundamentals of English.
Mathematical Focus:
Our staff is dedicated to tutoring and mentoring small
groups using the student’s assignments as a guide, in the subject of math. If they
are reluctant or don’t have homework, we provide them with other
activities that are still mathematically challenging. Focal points include
number sense, geometry, logic and reasoning, problem solving, patterning
and pre-algebra.
Science, Social Studies & History Focus:
In these subject areas, we lend assistance with projects, research and
reports. This is also an area where we tend to incorporate enrichment
activities that compliment what is being taught in the classroom.
